Is Rain on Your Washington, UT Windows Making Them Dirty?
Homeowners seem to think it’s the rain that gets their windows dirty. Not necessarily.
I’ve cleaned windows around Washington and St. George for years. Rain gets blamed for a lot of dirty windows. Most of the time, the rain isn’t the real problem.
Your windows were probably dirty before it rained.
Rainwater Isn’t As Dirty As You Think
Rain isn’t usually what leaves windows filthy. The bigger problem is what’s already sitting on the glass.
In Southern Utah dust isn’t exactly in short supply. It settles on windows, frames, screens, and tracks. Then when it rains and gets everything wet the water moves that dirt around.
When everything dries, you notice how dirty the windows look. The rain didn’t necessarily bring the dirt. It just made it so you could see it more clearly.
Dirty Screens Can Make Clean Windows Look Terrible
Screens are another problem I see while doing window cleaning in Washington, UT.
They usually collect plenty of dust between cleanings. When the rain hits the dirty screen it can carry some grime onto the glass.That’s one reason I like cleaning screens along with windows.
Your Sprinklers Are A Bigger Problem Than Rain
If I were choosing between rain and sprinklers, I’d be focused more on sprinklers.
Washington has hard water. When sprinkler water repeatedly hits exterior windows the water evaporates and leaves minerals behind. Those are the white spots on the windows.
Normal window cleaning may not remove those spots if they’ve been sitting there a long time. Hard water stain removal usually requires extra work.
If sprinklers regularly hit your windows, adjust the sprinkler heads. You’ll notice a big difference.
Why Do Windows Sometimes Look Worse After A Storm?
Wind also carries dust and lands on the wet glass. With both the rain and wind hitting your windows, the dirt from frames and screens wind up there also.
Then you’re left with spots or streaks.
With regularly cleaned exterior windows, screens, and frames there will be less grime moved around.
Should You Cancel Window Cleaning Because Rain Is Coming?
Only if we’re expecting a serious windstorm. Southern Utah wind and dust can make quite a team. If you know a wind storm is in the forecast, have the windows cleaned prior to its arrival.
Ordinary rain isn’t an automatic reason to cancel. If your windows need cleaning, it’s best to have them done to be prepared.
