Homeowners seem to think it’s the rain that gets their windows dirty. This isn’t necessarily true…
I’ve cleaned windows in Washington and St. George since October, 2017. Rain gets blamed for a lot of dirty windows. Most of the time, the rain isn’t the real problem.

Rainwater Isn’t Dirty, It’s The Dust
Rain isn’t usually what leaves windows filthy. Of course the real dirty window issue is already sitting on the glass.
In Southern Utah dust isn’t exactly in short supply. It settles on windows, frames, screens, and tracks. Then when it rains and gets everything wet, the water moves that dirt around.
The rain stops, your windows dry and now you notice how dirty the windows look. The rain didn’t bring the dirt. It just made it so you could see it more clearly. Just what you wanted to see.
Dirty Screens Might Make Clean Windows Look Terrible
Screens are another problem I see while doing window cleaning in Washington, UT.
They usually collect plenty of dust between cleanings. When the rain hits the dirty screen it can carry some grime onto the glass.That’s one reason I like cleaning screens along with windows.
Do You Water Your Windows Instead of Your Grass?
Your Sprinklers Are A Bigger Problem Than Rain
If you’re looking at rain vs. sprinklers, I’d be focused more on sprinklers.
Washington has hard water. When sprinkler water the glass and not your grass, this leaves minerals / stains behind. Those are the white spots on the windows.
Normal window cleaning may not remove those spots if they’ve been sitting there a long time. I’ve probably got my work cut out for me by the time you call.
If sprinklers regularly hit your windows, adjust the sprinkler heads. We’ll both notice a big difference.
Why Do Windows Sometimes Look Worse After A Storm?
The wind gets things started by providing a light layer of dust to coat the glass. Then comes the rain hitting your windows and now you have a very light layer of mud.
If your windows, screens, and frames are regularly cleaned, there’s less grime for the rain to expose.
Should You Cancel Window Cleaning Because Rain Is Coming?
Only if we’re expecting a serious windstorm. Southern Utah wind and dust can make quite a team.
If you know a wind storm is on its way, try and experiment. Have your windows cleaned before or during the rain / sprinkles.
Ordinary rain isn’t an automatic reason to cancel. If your windows need cleaning go ahead. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how clean the windows are after the storm.
